If you’re looking for a creamy, smoky, slightly spicy Chipotle Salad Dressing that adds a little protein boost to your salad and is also great for anyone with insulin resistance, this Greek yogurt version checks every box. It’s the same flavorful dressing (or sauce) featured in our Taco Salad With Ground Beef — but it absolutely deserves its own spotlight.

This homemade chipotle salad dressing is quick to make, made with real-food ingredients, and free from added sugar and added oils commonly found in store-bought dressings.

In the background we see a bowl of extra sauce, and in the right top corner we see a second serving of the taco salad.

Why This Chipotle Salad Dressing Is Better Than Store-Bought

Many bottled versions of chipotle salad dressing contain:

    • Added sugars
    • Soybean or canola oil (that add fat and really aren't necessary)
    • Preservatives
    • Minimal protein

    This homemade version:

    • Uses Greek yogurt for protein and creaminess
    • Contains no added sugar
    • Supports satiety and steady blood sugar
    • incredibly easy to make in under 5 minutes

If you're focused on reducing insulin resistance, swapping out sugary dressings is one of the easiest nutrition upgrades you can make.

Ingredients for the Chipotle Salad Dressing

Photograph of the ingredients for the Chipotle Salad Dressing: Greek yogurt, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, lime and garlic.

Greek Yogurt: Fage Yogurt is our go-to Greek yogurt. It's so creamy and smooth. But, use the one you like the most. We use the 5% version, but low-fat is perfectly fine and has a little more protein.

Chipotle Peppers In Adobo Sauce: We always keep a can or jar of these in our pantry to add smokiness to any dish. Chipotle peppers are spicy, though. If you're not into spice, you can use less of the sauce and peppers. Alternatively, you could add more lime and/or garlic.

Fresh Lime: Always, always, use fresh juice. Lemons and limes are perpetually on the shopping list.

Garlic: We always opt for fresh garlic in our dressings and sauces. It's more pungent and sharp than garlic powder. (However, we typically turn to garlic powder for certain cooked recipes where fresh garlic can easily burn and turn bitter.)

Salt: It's not featured in the ingredient photo above, but you'll definitely need it to round out the flavors.

How To Make The Chipotle Salad Dressing

This salad dressing is made in less than 5 minutes with only 3 steps:

    1. Add all of the ingredients to the blender.
    2. Blend for about 20-30 seconds.
    3. Make it as thin or thick as you like. Add one tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the desired consistency.

    Ingredient Swaps and Substitutions

    • Fresh lemon juice can be used in place of the lime juice.
    • Non-dairy yogurt can be used in place of the Greek Yogurt, but the protein content will go down and the taste may vary.
    • Smoked paprika and cayenne pepper can be used in place of the chipotle peppers. Start with ¼ teaspoon of each and adjust as desired.

Serving Suggestions for Chipotle Salad Dressing

    • Use as a dip for raw veggies or drizzle over roasted veggies, like our Roasted Broccoli and Cauliflower.
    • As already mentioned, add it to a taco salad or bowl such as our Taco Bowl with Ground Beef. It's also great on tacos!
    • Top your chicken, steak or fish for added flavor, like on our Boneless Chicken Thighs.
    • Use it as a salad dressing on any simple, mixed greens salad.

    Instructions

    • Put all ingredients in the blender.
½ cup Greek Yogurt, 1 tbsp chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, 1 tbsp lime juice, 1 tsp Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt, 1 garlic clove
    • Blend for about 20-30 seconds.
    • Add water one tablespoon at a time and blend briefly after each addition until you reach the desired consistency. Set aside.

    Notes

Not all salt is equal. We prefer Diamond Crystal Kosher salt, (affiliate link) and it's what we use in all our recipes. The flaky crystals, which dissolve more readily than regular table salt or other Kosher salts, make it easier to use. Be aware that Diamond Crystal Kosher salt is about half as salty as most other salts, so adjust accordingly when substituting!
