Hi! I’m Jackelin, the Food Photographer and the creative half of Buena Wellness.
I’ve had a long love affair with all things food and photography. My mom was an excellent home cook, and I grew up on delicious home-cooked meals. At age 15, I inherited my brother's SLR camera and thus started my love of photography.
The Beginning of My Cooking and Professional Food Photographer Journey
At 18, I became a vegetarian, and back then, meatless restaurant options were few and far between. In a way, I was forced to become a creative cook, and I came to love it. I’m no longer a vegetarian, but nutrition and a healthy, active lifestyle have remained important to me over the years.
In 2018, I left a career in marketing and put those skills to work by starting a food blog called Salted City (named for Salt Lake City, where I lived for 26 years). By then, I’d been a professional portrait photographer for nearly 20 years. I put my craft to the test as I learned the ins and outs of being a food photographer. Soon, I became enamored with the art of photographing food, I put aside my blog, and started shooting for food-related businesses. I was hooked.
A New Chapter and a Serendipitous Friendship
In early 2024, my husband and I moved to Colorado. That’s where I met Jen while carpooling with a mutual friend to a pickleball tournament. We talked a lot on our three-hour car ride, and I was instantly intrigued by Jen’s background in nutrition. We soon learned we had many things in common - pickleball (of course), a love of hiking and exploring the outdoors, pilates, listening to live music, and constantly talking about food and nutrition.
It was a natural progression for Jen and me to partner up on this food blogging journey. She has taught me so much about nutrition and continues to impress me with her ever-expanding knowledge and curiosity. Jen’s nutritional expertise is the guiding light behind every recipe.
Cooking and Eating For Health and Longevity
The recipes in this blog have been developed to help you manage insulin resistance, maintain a healthy metabolism, and increase your chances of living a long, healthy life. Most of the recipes are simple and can be meal-prepped for weekday meals. Others are a little more elaborate for days when you have more time.
I have learned from Jen that if you eat the right combination of foods, you can achieve your nutrition goals while remaining satiated longer, so you have the energy you need to maintain an active lifestyle.
Since I began adopting the principles we promote on this blog (combined with daily exercise), I have been successful in maintaining a healthy weight, my focus is greatly improved, and I feel a new level of energy. I love the way I feel, and I want you to experience these benefits too. I genuinely love the work that we're doing, and I know we can make a difference in people's lives by helping them balance their glucose levels.
Thank you for joining us on this journey to health and longevity!
