Hi!  My name is Jen Birge!  I’m a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator who specializes in Insulin Resistance. And, I'm one of the co-creators of Buena Wellness. I’m so excited that you found our blog.

Maybe you are like many of the people I work with daily, who are interested in having access to recipes that help reduce insulin resistance. If so, I’m happy to say, you’ve come to the right place!

My Journey With Prediabetes and My Commitment to Helping Others

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, helping people improve insulin resistance or prevent diabetes is what I love most. I had my own experience with prediabetes in my 30s. So, I understand how important and challenging it can be to make changes that are effective and lasting.

Like others, I struggled with this diagnosis, but eventually I figured out what I needed to do to stay out of the prediabetes range. My personal experience has definitely helped me to improve my skills as a dietitian.

Insulin Resistance Dietitian Focuses on Sustainable Changes

The main focus of my practice has been to help people improve insulin resistance while achieving a healthy weight, if needed.  In my years of working with clients, I’ve learned that people want guidance in making realistic, sustainable changes.

One of the main principles that I teach for healthy glucose (blood sugar) metabolism is to balance protein with carbohydrates. You will find this theme throughout our recipes and meal plans.

Joining Forces to Promote Cooking and Eating for a Balanced Metabolism

I am originally from Texas, but have lived most of my adult life in New Mexico and Colorado.  After moving to Buena Vista from the Front Range in 2023, I met Jackelin on our way to a pickleball tournament.  We play a lot of pickleball!

We became fast friends and I soon discovered what an amazing cook she is!  AMAZING.  I was also intrigued by the fact that she's a professional food photographer and that she even had experience as a food blogger.

Jackelin and I soon discovered that with our respective skills, we make a great team. Our food blog combines her ability to make simple and delicious meals with my knowledge of keeping nutrition balanced.  We both believe that the very definition of a balanced meal means that it does not contribute to increased blood sugar or insulin levels.

Wellness Tips from an Insulin Resistance Dietitian

In addition to working on our food blog, I still see patients one-on-one. And, I am working on a digital course on preventing diabetes. Be sure to check out our Services Page and our Wellness Page where you can find tips for improving insulin resistance.

Aside from work, I love spending time with my kids, hiking, snowshoeing, playing pickleball, soaking in the hot springs, and getting together with friends for games or live music.

I hope you will enjoy making the recipes we've developed for you. With dedication to choosing the right foods, you can achieve healthy blood sugar and insulin levels for a balanced metabolism.
